Acne Scars

Our providers at Ethereal Rejuvenation Clinic understand how frustrating acne breakouts and acne scars can be. The good news is that acne scars can be treated!

How Are Scars Formed?

Scars are formed when the acne breakout penetrates the skin deeply and damages the tissues beneath it.

Common Types of Scars in Acne~

Atrophic scars – flat, thin scars or depressed scars. These occur when not enough collagen is laid when wound is healing.  There are different types of Atrophic scars-

  • Ice-pick scars – these are deep, narrow, V shaped scars. These are most difficult to treat as they extend deep into the skin.

  • Rolling scars – broad depressions with a sloping edge.

  • Boxcar scars – broad U-shaped depressions with sharply defined edges. They can be shallow or deep. The shallower they are, the better they respond to skin resurfacing treatments.

Hypertrophic scars- These scars are most common on chest and back. They stand above the surface of surrounding skin and are caused by too much collagen during healing.

What Treatments Do We Offer at Ethereal Rejuvenation Clinic?:

 Chemical resurfacing treatments:

  1. Alpha-hydroxy acids- This mild acid gently exfoliates the outer layer of skin, thus making the discoloration and scars less noticeable. This treatment is good for new and superficial scarring. It is safe for all skin types and works for all types of scars.

  2. Salicylic acid- This acid clears pores, reduces swelling and redness, and exfoliates the skin when applied on the skin. It is available in different strengths for different skin types. It’s a good treatment for all types of scars.

  3. VI peels- These are medium depth chemical peels that is safe on all skin types. It’s great for treatment of excessive oil, acne with hyperpigmentation, acne scarring, hormonal acne and adult acne.

Microneedling with and without Platelet Rich Plasma:

Microneedling treatment is done using a hand held device/pen. The treatment is done on the numbed skin. The needles from the device cause pin point injury to the skin that encourages collagen production by taking advantage of body’s natural healing response. There’s plenty of evidence to suggest that microneedling helps reduce the depth of acne scars. It may take 6-9 months before you see changes, according to American Academy of Dermatology.

Platelet Rich plasma( PRP) when added to Microneedling can give you better results than treatment with Microneedling alone. This treatment uses your own blood which is spun in a centrifuge to obtain PRP. PRP is a rich source of platelets. Platelets are a type of cell in your blood that releases growth factors. These factors can stimulate collagen production and tissue generation when injected into your

Cortisone treatment for Hypertrophic scars:

Injecting cortisone into the raised hypertrophic scars can help flatten them significantly. Multiple treatments may be needed to achieve desired results.

 Laser Scar Removal:

We use Fractional non ablative laser technology that delivers pulses of laser light into the skin to target and break down scar tissue. This helps generate healthy new tissue to form in its place that is smoother and more even in skin tone. Most people need 4-8 treatment sessions for desired results depending on the scar.
